Course Description:

You have the daunting challenge of recognizing subtle changes in a patient's condition that can lead to a medical emergency or worse, a patient's death. Are you sure you have the knowledge and skills you need to handle these difficult situations?

Learner Objectives:

  1. Identify 5 essential components of a "down and dirty" assessment in your patient when they have a sudden decomposition in health status.
  2. State 3 rapid interventions that can stabilize a patient who is symptomatic with a low blood pressure.
  3. Recognize the most common causes of arterial blood gas abnormalities.
  4. Assess the 3 most common dysrhythmias using rhythm strip interpretation.
  5. Evaluate the risk of re-expansion pulmonary edema in the patient with a chest tube for pleural effusion.
  6. Review the correct technique for opening an occluded central line lumen.
  7. Summarize the difference between failure to capture and failure to sense in a pacemaker and how each is resolved.
  8. Recognize the three biggest concerns patients recognize at end of life.
  9. Discuss the difference between preload, contractility and afterload as components impacting cardiac output.
  10. Identify correct locations for measuring CVP, Arterial Line and Wedge waveforms.
  11. Differentiate between hypotonic, isotonic and hypertonic IV fluids and when each is considered most effective.
  12. Recognize the blood product of choice for Disseminated Intravascular Coagulopathy.
  13. Contrast the difference between hypovolemic shock, septic shock and cardiovascular shock in both assessment and treatment priorities.
  14. Prioritize ways to increase the ventilator patient's oxygenation status.
  15. Compare and contrast CPAP and BiPAP, as well as their target populations.
  16. Compare the differences between a STEMI and NSTEMI.

SEAN G. SMITH, RN, BSN, NREMT-P, C-NPT, CCRN, CMC, CEN, CFRN, FP-C, CPEN

Sean G. Smith has experience in both emergency care and critical care. He has written neo-natal/pediatric pharmacology CE exams for the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, as well as writing for Mosby clinical updates. He has practiced and taught critical/emergency care and pre-hospital emergency medical services for over 20 years. Career highlights include research in molecular endocrinology, serving in the US Navy, a wide variety of ICUs, flight nursing, and medical missions, as well as offering medical support to NASA. Sean lectures at the national level and has extensive text review/exam writing/contributing author credits. He holds multiple advanced specialty certifications in critical care, emergency, and flight nursing, as well as cardiac medicine, and neonatal/pediatric critical care transport.

Sean is a dedicated and respected educator serving as an official Instructor for Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Basic Life Support (BLS-RF), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS-RF), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS-RF), Tactical Combat Casualty Course (TCCC), Geriatric Education for Emergency Medical Services (GEMS), Fundamentals of Critical Care Support (FCCS), and Pediatric Fundamentals of Critical Care Support (PFCCS-IC).
